What is the role of CIOs in today's banking scenario? How do they constantly balance the constantly demanding ‘run-the-business’ and ‘change-the-business’ requirements of the bank? How do they view the triangle of business - operations - technology? Pravir Vohra - former President & Group CTO, ICICI Bank Ltd - addressed a full house with some of the above questions through his personal experiences and strategic view of the banking and financial services industry. The second session of the premium talk series 8012 Design Talks was hosted on 5th February at Global Learning Centre, Nxt Lvl, Chennai.

The audience was thrilled to witness Pravir Vohra during the thought-provoking session on ‘The role of CIOs in today’s banking scenario.’ He opened the session on the dynamic nature of digital and how technology solution providers can add value in the present scenario. He touched upon the challenges faced by CIOs in today’s world, the pros and cons that come with the authority of being a CIO in the current technology space. On discussing the perception of CIOs, he listed some of the pain points such as weak communication and influencing skills, inability to discuss technology issues in business value terms, absence of strong financial literacy, etc.

Further, referring to the denizens of today as ‘Generation Digital’ he urged the audience to use this digital prowess a positive difference to solutions. He steered the session towards how the level of digitisation is creating a positive impact in today’s banking world, unlocking a sort of renaissance over the past decade. Offering his insight on what actually the role of a CIO is, he said “the job of a CIO is to be able to ideate to new technologies.” And he also stressed that CIOs have to take responsibility for every decision they make and also focus on ensuring security and compliance.

On a concluding note, Vohra mentioned that CIOs in this competitive era ought to be more focused, more collaborative in nature, more than just facilitators and decision makers. The talk closed on a positive note highlighting how the country can economically become stronger in the BFSI sector.
